Wednesday 1030 am

Okay guys lets get busy. No one has put anything in, the clock is running. Remember to keep your plants seperated by cup number. Everything you do, blog it.
RYAN: I talked to Joann today and she will forward your name for the fisheries class later on in the year. You were the only person to put in for NACTEC so it should be a go. Seems a shame more students did not put in for anything.
EVERYONE: Work on your close up app's. You can finish them on Monday and get them sent in.
Practice should be on Friday tentatively at the regular time. Nondalton and PIP both have teams so we need to be ready for them.
Talk to you soon and see you later.

Monday

Okay everybody this are the instructions for the next two weeks.
I will give you some dirt and five seeds. You decide where you are going to grow them and what mixture of dirt you will use and how much sunlight and water they will get. You get to choose the variables in this experiment. All i am asking you is to try to grow these seeds for the next two weeks and blog the results daily, at least.
You decide everything the seeds and i am just along for the ride.
After two weeks you will bring the plants into the class for final evaluation and a write up of your experiment.
The steps you will be taking:
Identify a problem. The problem is that people in third world countries are starving and you need to come up with a solution. You will have 5 seeds and dirt to help you come up witht he solution.
Gather information. How does the seed grow best. What about in the desert areas, what is best for them? What about those people who dont have close access to water?
Make Hypothesis. For each plant and how it is going to grow. Wjhat is your best educated guess?
Test the hypothesis. Are you right or wrong? Many scientists were wrong for a lot of years until they canme up with the solution.
Analyze the results. What happened? Why?
Draw Conclusions. If i had_____ then _____.
So you have two weeks to solve the worlds food crisis. How are you going to do it? Make sure your cups are numbered so you wont forget which cup has which seed. That is your first blog entry. How are you going to plant the seeds? What are you planting them in (sand, potting soil, sand and soil)(measure it)? How much water (measure it)? How much sun(measure it in minutes)? What is the temp? (cold or hot and if possible 72 degrees F or 21 Celcius) You need to be as specific as you can. Scientists have to be so they can repeat their successes and not their failures.
Once you have told all about the variables in your experiments (sun, water, soil, etc....)the you will plant the seeds exactly like you said in the cups you said you were planting them in.
Day 2 comes up and you will tell me about each cup and what is happening. Continue what you said you were going to do on day 1. Dont decide you feel sorry for the little seed and you want to give it 14 hours of sunlight a day. Dont change anything.
Day 3, again what is happening..................Did it grow? How much? measure it.
Day 4 again, what is happening.....................
You get the idea until day 14. Then you will compile all of your studies and let me know what you came up with. Either a paper, powerpoint, movie, whatever. Throw some graphing in, maybe pictures, anyhting that will enhance the presentation.
This will be your main chance to get the standards done for putting together and conducting an experiment. Next time it is on you to get everything done. Make sure it is your best work. Not some sloppy mess that anyone could put together. You are a scientist afterall.
